Mercedes is adding a convertible model to the line-up for the 2011 Mercedes-Benz E-Class. Identical in size to the two-door coupe model introduced last year, the convertible matches the coupe’s engine options: a 3.5-liter V6 rated at 268 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque for the E350 cabriolet and a 382-hp 5.5-liter V8 with 391 lb-ft for the E550 cab.

While the BMW 3 Series, Infiniti G37 and Lexus IS now have retractable hardtops, Mercedes has elected to stick with a traditional soft-top. When open-air motoring is desired, the cabriolet roof folds into a special compartment behind the rear seat panel.

Passengers are likely to appreciate Mercedes’ new AirCap, a feature that consists of two components: a wind deflector that extends from the top of the windshield by 2.4 inches and a draft-stop between the rear seats. The AirCap’s wind deflector is very effective at reducing wind intrusion with the top down. Also present is Mercedes’ Airscarf, a feature first introduced on the SL and SLK roadsters; it shoots warm air around the neck through outlets in the front passengers’ head restraints.
